“I wasn’t surprised when the hospital told me my mom was on the registry, because I know how much she enjoyed helping others..."

Sandra Greene was just 53 when a stroke sent her to the hospital which eventually led to her death.

When her only child, Tracy, was approached about donation she readily consented because she knew her mom was a giving, caring person who would help anyone.  “It was an easy decision to make”, Tracy said.  “I wasn’t surprised when the hospital told me my mom was on the registry, because I know how much she enjoyed helping others.  She always cared about other people – her family, her friends, even strangers.”

Sandy was working as a delivery person for a local pharmacy at the time of her death.  She loved her job because she got to talk to and help people every day.  Her devotion to her family was evident in the cooking she did for them and especially during the holiday meals where she would host for her whole family.  Sandy loved to laugh and most enjoyed time spent with her family.  Each person knew how special he or she was to Sandy.  She helped Tracy with her children and babysat whenever she could – treasuring her time with her grandchildren.

Being active and outdoors was also something Sandy enjoyed- she owned and cared for horses all her life and knew how to ski.  She loved to garden and sew.  Her favorite color was yellow (which matched her disposition).  Sandy's friendliness and bubbly personality made people smile.

Tracy has been corresponding with one of her mom’s kidney recipients – in a recent letter she wrote:

”I know now that participating in the organ donation program was absolutely the right decision…To know that her gift was able to save a life is an unbelievable and wonderful feeling.  And to know that a part of her is still living feels like a miracle.”

Do you know someone who has been touched by organ, eye or tissue donation?
