New law hopes to boost number of New York organ donors
Changes wording on Driver’s License Application at DMV
The new law will require anyone over the age of 18 and getting a new driver’s license to answer whether they would like to join the NY organ donor list. The question is currently optional. “Lauren’s Law” is named in honor of 12 year old Lauren Shields, from Rockland County, NY. Lauren survived a heart transplant in 2009. For 2 years, Shields made multiple trips to the state capitol to persuade lawmakers to support the measure. “Lauren’s Law” will go into effect in October of 2013.
Who: Chris Jacobs, Erie County Clerk; Mark Simon, Unyts CEO & President; John Henry, VP, Regional Center for Excellence for Transplantation and Kidney Care; lawmakers including NY State Assembly members Sean Ryan and Ray Walter and Mickey Kearns, who all helped to pass this legislation.
When: Monday, October 22, 2012 @ 10am
Where: Erie County Department of Motor Vehicles, 170 Pearl Street (Rath Building)
