• A single donor can save or enhance the lives of up to 50 people.

  • Nearly 124,000 individuals are awaiting transplants, approximately 10% are from New York State.

  • Approximately 74 organ transplants take place every day in the US.

  • Sadly, an average of 22 patients die every day, simply because the organ they needed did not become available in time.

  • On average, 118 people are added to the nation’s organ waiting list each day- one every 10 minutes.

  • The time span between organ recovery to transplantation can be anywhere from 4-72 hours.

  • Don’t rule yourself out as a donor because of age or medical condition. Physicians will determine at the time of death what organs and tissues can be donated.

  • More than 47,000 people corneas were transplanted in 2014.

  • More than 1 million tissue transplants are performed each year, but the surgical need for tissue continues to rise.

  • 35% of patients awaiting kidney transplants are African American.  Genetics are more critical with kidney transplants. Therefore, donated organs will “match” better with people of the same race.
